Vegan sweets in December

When Christmas is approaching, you can see many festive sweets and packages in the confectionary section in Entetsu Department Store. Unlike western pastry shops, there are no special products for Christmas in Japanese-style confectionary stores. But I found some new kinds made by ingredients typical in this season, for example, yuzu.

Yuzu is a small yellow citrus fruit and is cultivated also in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is often used as an ingredient of Japanese style dressing. In addition to usage for food, we have a tradition to take a bath with yuzu floating in the water on the winter solstice. It is said that you won’t catch cold if you do so because yuzu warms up your body. Yuzu has a nice fragrance and is sometimes used for essential oil. In Korea, yujacha or yuzu tea is very popular.

This is one of sweets made of yuzu I found in the department store.

The surface is sugared yuzu peel, and the filling is kidney and white adzuki bean paste. The yuzu peel had a refreshing and slightly bitter flavor like marmalade. It matched well the sweetness of the bean paste. Though it was a small sweet, it left a pleasant aftertaste of yuzu.

There may be more yuzu sweets that are as tasty as this one in other shops in the department store. However, I think this was the prettiest.

In addition to new ingredients, there were continuously sweets made of autumn products, such as persimmons, sweet potatoes, and chestnuts. This sweet contained dried persimmons though it was hardly recognizable from the appearance. It looked like a slice of roll cake.

I like to see fancy looking sweets. This may become a wonderful a present for a large family.

These colorful sweets are made from agar and bean paste as main ingredients (some of them contain eggs). I’m looking forward to seeing the next series that may be designed for New Year's Day.
